FWIW, I don't have a problem with him being praised. Never saw him play obviously, but I've seen plenty of videos - he was obviously brilliant.

Goals to games ratio he is surely the best ever, I just prefer Bobby Charlton. The likes of Rooney obviously aren't fit to be mentioned in the same sentence.

Them again when I was young I thought Bobby Moore scored the hat-trick in the WC Final, so what do I know?

How West Ham didn't sign him as a kid when he lived down the fucking road pretty much sums-up what an amateur joke cunt club we are...

Dicksie...that is so wrong, it's untrue. Back in the day, Chelsea had a reputation for using huge financial inducements to parents of young players from all over London, to ensure the boys would sign for them. We just didn't do that kind of thing. Not that it stopped Wally St Pier from attracting Martin Peters, Trevor Brooking and a whole load of other quality young players to the club. We also won the ECWC with every player, except the goalkeeper, having been with us since school. Nothing amateur in that.

Have only ever heard good things about him. My old dad used to deliver wine to his place (what a surprise) and said he always took time out to invite him in and chat and was a big tipper.

Dicksie,

We also missed out on Terry Venables from that era who was also from Dagenham.

3 of the best English centre backs of the last 25 years were also on our doorstep in East London/Essex and all supported West Ham but we somehow missed out on them.

Tony Adams
Sol Campbell
John Terry

He used to live down The Fairway in Upminster. As you turn into The Fairway from Hall Lane he lived in the second house on the left. The house that is now the first house on the left was Greavesies Tennis Court!

My aunt used to deliver flowers there, she worked in Studio Florists in Upminster years ago.

I strangely remember once on S&G when they were talking about our upcoming home game that day (can't remember against who) Saint commented that the away side have a good record at West Ham, Greavsie gave Saint a desparing knowing look before remarking slowly 'Saint, everyone has a good record at West Ham'

He use to like taking the piss out of us did Greavsie.

I remember in shoot magazine greavsie used to do the letters page with a feature called wally of the week, some wag asked whether west Ham were going to win the league that season (think it was beginning of 86/87 eason, greavsie went into one saying how he'd love to see his local club win the league but it'll never happen as the board had no ambition whatsoever and were happy to rest on its laurels. He was spot on too.

PD
He started at Chelsea & went to Milan for a year and then to Spurs before coming to us in part exchange for Martin Peters.

Maybe he never went back because they are cunts

Re: Jimmy Greaves in intensive care
The most natural goalscorer these shores have ever produced. Hope he pulls through but it doesn't look good.

I was reading just recently that he has never been back to Spurs once (apart from when he played against them) Apparatly still very bitter that they sold him to Chelsea against his wishes.

I had a similar experience with Ashley Cole in 2003. My Arsenal supporting cousin insisted we knocked at his Mum's house as it is so hard to get Arsenal autographs, anything was great for him. Cole wasn't there but always left signed 6x4 photos because a lot of people knocked on the house. His Mum told us to come back on the Friday that week at about 2pm and he would be there.

We returned on the Friday, knocked on the door...he wasn't there. We waited outside until he arrived...was about 7pm in the end, he was nice, signed my cousins shirts and whatever other bits he had and spoke for about 10 minutes.

We walked back to the tube station to find it was closed. I think its a station on the loop on the central line. We didn't know the area very well so we walked back to the house and asked where the nearest open station was. He invited us in and ordered and paid for a cab back to Gravesend for us.

Re: Jimmy Greaves in intensive care
There's a goal he cored for England when the ball is literally stuck to his foot as he dribbles it.

I'm sure he and others squad members finally got a winners medal in the end.
